Quick answer

If your Pfister shower handle only turns and the valve is stamped 0X8, JX8, VB8 or JV8, the current genuine cartridge is 974-5299. It replaces the old 974-042 (974-0420), which Pfister now marks "Discontinued and Replaced By 974-5299".

Where to buy: genuine part from Pfister.

What it fits

  • Pfister lists 974-0420 for 0X8/JX8/VB8/JV8 deep casting valves.
  • Pfister's 974-5299 page lists "Fits VB8 & JV8 Bodies" and "Backwards Compatibility with Legacy 0X8/JX8 Cartridges".
  • PlumbingSupply.com (a retailer) says it fits the 08, 808 and R89 Catalina series made after 2004. We haven't seen that on a Pfister page.

Specs (Pfister spec sheet SS-974-5299)

  • Pressure balanced (down to 1.0 gpm), ceramic disc, stainless steel spool
  • Integrated temperature limit stop, reversible
  • Overall length: 4-1/8 in (105 mm) with the deep-casting adapter, 4 in (101 mm) without
  • Certified to ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1, including ASSE 1016 Type P

Extension kits

If your valve is set deep in the wall, Pfister lists extension kits: 970-083 for SecurePfit trims and 910-563 for non-SecurePfit trims.

Scald safety: this is a pressure-balancing cartridge. Replace it with the same kind, and reset the temperature limit stop afterward so the handle can't reach a dangerously hot setting.
