Quick answer
The 1248 is not a single-handle shower cartridge. It's Moen's two-handle, high-flow cartridge for Roman tub valves (one on the hot side, one on the cold), and it also turns up behind the lower handle of older ExactTemp spa valves.
Where to buy: genuine part from the maker.
Moen 1248 on moen.comWhat it fits
- Two-handle Roman tub valves. Moen's product page title calls it a replacement "for High Flow Roman Tubs (Hot or Cold and for 4999 Valve)".
- 1/2" ExactTemp vertical spa (2000 to 2006): the lower flow-control handle (rotate to turn on/off). The upper handle is a separate thermostatic cartridge, the 103674.
Sources disagree on "all Roman tubs"
The archived Moen 101 page (2021) says the 1248 is "designed to fit all Moen two-handle Roman tub valves." Moen's current Roman tub guide is more specific. It says that in 2017 Moen started using both the 1248 and the 1258 in deck-mount Roman tubs, that the two are not interchangeable, and that you need to identify yours by eye. It also lists the 1224 and 14891 for garden tubs, and the 1258 for wall- and floor-mount two-handle fillers. Go by the newer guide.
How to tell it apart
| Cartridge | Diameter (Moen, approx.) | Handle rotation | Retainer | Stem extension |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1248 (deck-mount Roman tub) | 0.84 in (2.13 cm), about a nickel | 180° | Embedded cartridge nut | Splined |
| 1258 (deck-mount Roman tub) | 0.88 in (2.24 cm) | 90° | Embedded cartridge nut | Partially splined |
| 1224 (garden tub) | 0.72 in (1.83 cm), about a penny | 180° | Nut | White "D" or splined |
These figures come from Moen's Roman tub guide. The quickest practical test is how far the handle turns from off to full on: about a half turn (180°) points to the 1248, and about a quarter turn (90°) points to the 1258.
Moen's guide also separates garden tubs from Roman tubs by spout reach for some models (Brantford, Castleby, Chateau). Use that table if you're not sure which kind of tub filler you have.
