Quick answer
On a Pfister Avante tub/shower valve, you pull the handle out to start the water and turn it to set temperature. The cartridge is 974-292. You'll also see it as S74-292 and 974-2920.
Where to buy: genuine part from Pfister.
Pfister 974-2920 on pfisterfaucets.comWhat it fits
- Pfister's spec sheet: "Compatible with 0X9 Valve Bodies".
- Pfister's Home Depot answer: S74-292 is used for shower valve 0X9-010A, the volume-control mixing valve.
- Pfister says it's not compatible with other manufacturers' faucets.
Size (spec sheet)
Overall length 4-1/16 in (103 mm). The sheet also shows 1-5/16 in (33 mm) as a cross dimension. Home Depot lists height 4.06 in and width 1.88 in.
Is it pressure-balanced? Pfister's pages disagree
Pfister's spec sheet SS-974-292 says "Non-Pressure Balanced", and Home Depot's listing says "For use in OX9 non-pressure balanced valve bodies". Pfister's 974-2920 product page calls it a "factory original pressure-balanced cartridge". We trust the spec sheet, which matches Pfister's own description of the 0X9 as a volume-control valve and the 0X8 as the pressure-balancing one. Don't count on this cartridge for anti-scald protection.
Removal (Pfister tub/shower instructions)
Turn off the water supply first.
- Remove the button, screw and handle.
- Unscrew the collar nut.
- Thread the handle screw back into the cartridge and use it to pull the cartridge out of the body.
- Insert the new cartridge, tighten the collar nut and reassemble in reverse order.
Old Avante cartridges can be very hard to pull. See stuck cartridge for general tips.
