Why is my smoke detector chirping?

Quick answer

NFPA says a single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed. If it keeps chirping after you replace the battery, NFPA says the alarm is at the end of its life and must be replaced. A continued set of three loud beeps is different: that means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.

Random chirps

Kidde lists a loose or wrong battery, an open battery door, humidity or steam, airflow from a vent or fan within three feet, temperatures outside 40 to 95°F, and power surges. On hardwired alarms, it adds a loose white neutral wire. See hardwired chirping.

Guides in this section

Treat every alarm as real first. First Alert says not to assume an alarm only needs a reset if there might be smoke. Troubleshoot only once the area is safe. NFPA says to test every smoke alarm at least once a month.
