Quick answer
Keurig's K-Elite guide gives three steps. Pour the whole bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into the empty reservoir, then fill the bottle with water and add that too. Run large brews into a mug until the Add Water light comes on, let the brewer sit on for 30 minutes, then rinse with fresh water for at least 12 brews. Keurig says to descale every 3 to 6 months. Some newer models say every 3 months.
The three steps (K-Elite guide)
Before you start: Keurig says you need a large ceramic mug (not paper), fresh water, Keurig Descaling Solution and a sink. Take any pod out of the holder and remove the water filter if you use one. Allow about 45 minutes.
- Descaling solution rinse. Turn the brewer off. Pour the entire bottle into the empty reservoir, fill the empty bottle with water and pour that in. Turn the brewer on and run a hot water brew at the largest size into the mug. Pour it in the sink.
- Rinse and repeat, then rest. Keep brewing with no pod until the Add Water light comes on. Leave the brewer on for at least 30 minutes. Then empty what's left and rinse the reservoir well.
- Fresh water rinse. Fill to the MAX line and run largest-size brews with no pod. Do at least 12 rinse brews. You'll likely need to refill once.
How it differs by model

| K-Duo | Every 3 months, or with low volume or slower brewing | Carafe and single-cup rinses: 4 carafe brews and 4 single-cup brews. About 75 minutes |
Guides in this section

Foam is normal. Keurig says the solution can foam as it reacts with scale. If a heavily scaled brewer stops dispensing, see not brewing a full cup.
How we work: every step comes from Keurig's own Use & Care Guides, linked below. Keurig's guides call for Keurig Descaling Solution and don't give a vinegar method, so we don't either. Check your model's guide if it isn't listed here.
