Quick answer

Most PetSafe collars with a replaceable battery take one of two sealed battery modules: the 6-volt RFA-67 or the 3-volt RFA-188. They look alike, twist in the same way, and don't swap. The RFA-67 goes in full-size fence and bark collars. The RFA-188 goes in the little-dog and cat collars.

PetSafe's Deluxe In-Ground Cat Fence Receiver page also lists one RFA-188 as its battery. The Stay & Play Replaceable Battery collar (sold earlier as the Free to Roam collar) takes the RFA-67.

Not sure which one is in your collar?

  • Look at the old battery. PetSafe says a genuine RFA-67 is printed with arrows, the model number, the PetSafe.com website and a seven-digit date code. The RFA-188 is printed with the PetSafe.com website.
  • Check the collar's size. Little-dog and cat collars use the smaller 3V RFA-188. Standard fence collars and the Basic Bark Control Collar use the 6V RFA-67.
  • Check the manual. PetSafe's RFA-188 page says to check your manual for the right battery.
  • Rechargeable collars take no battery. Collars like the YardMax and the Rechargeable In-Ground Fence Receiver charge by cord instead.

How long a battery lasts

BatteryVoltageLife per PetSafe
RFA-676V1–3 months, depending on use
RFA-1883VAbout 1–2 months; up to 5 years on the shelf

PetSafe's own pages give slightly different numbers. Its Stay & Play collar page says 1–2 months for the RFA-67, and the RFA-188 page says about 1 month in one place and 1–2 months in another. PetSafe notes that the first battery may run down faster during the first weeks of use, and its support team says off-brand batteries are known to have a shorter life. See RFA-67 battery equivalent.

Low-battery light: on the Basic In-Ground Fence collar, PetSafe says a red light flashing once every 4–5 seconds means the battery is low. Swap it before it dies, because a dead collar does nothing.
