How we research our guides

Last updated Oct 25, 2026

This page explains how a WH2L Hub guide gets written and kept up to date, so you can decide how much to trust it. Short version: we read the manufacturer's own documents, link every one of them, and say plainly when something isn't clear.

You'll see Ollie, our cartoon owl mascot, on reader answers. He stands for this part of the job: reading the manual so you don't have to. The reading itself is done by the WH2L Hub team, as described below.

Where the facts come from

In rough order of how much we trust them:

  1. The maker's own documents. Installation manuals, spec sheets, parts diagrams, support articles and filter or part finders.
  2. Standards and safety groups, such as NSF for water filter certifications, NFPA for smoke alarms, and USB-IF for cables.
  3. Retailer and parts-store listings, mostly for fit lists and cross-references, and only when they match what the maker says or we point out that they don't.

We don't use forum posts or other blogs as the source for a fact. They're useful for finding out which questions people actually ask, and that's how we pick topics.

What every guide includes

  • A short answer near the top, so you don't have to scroll for it.
  • A Sources list at the bottom with a link to each document and the date we last checked them.
  • An Updated date near the title. It changes when we re-check the sources or fix something.
  • Safety notes where the job involves water, power or gas, and a plain "call a pro" when it should.

When sources disagree

It happens more than you'd think, sometimes between two pages from the same company. When it does, the guide says so in a highlighted note, explains which one we'd go with and why, and links both so you can judge for yourself.

What we don't do

  • We don't claim hands-on testing. These are research guides built from published documents, not product reviews.
  • No made-up authors, reviews, star ratings or testimonials.
  • No fixed prices in guides. Prices change too often to be useful here, so we leave them to the store.
  • Commissions don't pick the part. If a buy link ever pays us, the recommendation is still whatever the maker's documents say fits. See the affiliate disclosure.
  • Images aren't the exact product. Photos are generic illustrations. Diagrams are our own drawings of facts already on the page, marked "not to scale" where that matters.

Corrections

If something on a page is wrong or out of date, email ask@wh2lhub.com with the page link. A maker's document showing the right answer helps a lot. We fix confirmed errors and update the page date.
