Quick answer
There's no standard battery size that replaces an RFA-67. It's a sealed 6-volt module made for PetSafe collars. Other brands sell look-alike modules labeled "compatible", but PetSafe says using an alternate brand's battery can damage your collar and will void your warranty, and that off-brand batteries are known to have a shorter life.
What PetSafe says
- Use PetSafe batteries only. PetSafe's Basic In-Ground Fence steps say to use only PetSafe brand RFA-67 batteries, because third-party batteries can cause problems with how the collar works.
- Warranty. PetSafe's support team says an alternate brand's battery can damage the collar and will void the warranty.
- Battery life. PetSafe puts average life at up to 1–3 months for its own batteries, and says off-brand ones are known to have a shorter life.
We haven't tested any off-brand module, so we can't tell you one is safe. PetSafe's own position is the clearest guidance there is.
How to tell a genuine battery
PetSafe says to look for these printed markings:
| Battery | Markings on a genuine one |
|---|---|
| RFA-67 (6V) | Arrows, the model number, the PetSafe.com website and a seven-digit date code |
| RFA-188 (3V) | The PetSafe.com website |
If a battery you already own is missing those marks and the collar acts up, try a genuine one first. That's one of PetSafe's own checks in collar not working after a battery change.
Is the RFA-188 an equivalent?
No. The RFA-188 is PetSafe's 3-volt battery for little-dog and cat collars and some bark collars. The RFA-67 is 6 volts. They aren't interchangeable. The fit chart shows which collars take which.
Is there a rechargeable RFA-67?
PetSafe doesn't list one on its RFA-67 page. If you'd rather not buy batteries, PetSafe makes collars with a built-in rechargeable battery, such as the YardMax and its Rechargeable In-Ground Fence Receiver. Those charge by cord, and PetSafe says a full charge takes 2–3 hours.
Buying tip: PetSafe sells the RFA-67 in a 2-pack, and retailers carry larger multipacks. The RFA-188 has up to a 5-year shelf life, per PetSafe, so a multipack can sit in a drawer. Check the listing says PetSafe before you buy.
