Quick answer
The 1222 is the cartridge for Moen Posi-Temp tub and shower valves. These are single-handle valves where the handle only rotates.
Where to buy: genuine part from the maker.
Moen 1222 on moen.comWhat it fits
- Moen 101 says it "fits all Posi-Temp" tub/shower valves.
- Moen's shower chart describes the valve as a pressure-balanced cycling valve with no volume control.
- Examples from Moen documents: Essie Posi-Temp tub/shower (82330 series) and Align Posi-Temp trim (T2191, T2192, T2193) both list the 1222.
How to recognize it
- Handle: rotates only, with no push/pull. On the 82330 series, Moen says the handle turns counterclockwise through a 270° arc, with off at 6 o'clock.
- Cartridge: Moen 101 lists high-temperature thermoplastic and brass construction with a corrosion-resistant polyphenylene shell. It has an "H&C" tab and oval rubber grommets on each side.
- It is held by a retainer clip that slides out the top of the brass valve body.

The two repair-kit numbers come from different Moen documents, and we couldn't confirm whether one replaced the other. Ask Moen (1-800-BUY-MOEN) before ordering a kit.
Removal, in short
Shut off the water supply to the valve first. Cover the drain so small parts don't fall in.
- Remove the handle and handle parts (set screw, adapter, stops, stop tube; the details depend on your trim).
- Pull the retainer clip up and out of the top of the valve body with needle-nose pliers. If you can't reach it, remove the escutcheon. Don't drop the clip into the wall.
- Rotate the cartridge slightly with the plastic twisting tool. Moen's article says "a little more than 1/4 of a turn (45 degrees)", which contradicts itself (a quarter turn is 90°), so just turn it until the body loosens. Then grip the stem with pliers and pull. It may take real effort. If it won't budge, see stuck cartridge.
- Clean and flush the valve body before you install the new cartridge.
- Grease the oval grommets. Insert the new cartridge with the H&C tab up and sit it flush without rotating it. Refit the clip; if the clip won't go in, the cartridge isn't flush.
Hot and cold reversed? Moen's fix for the 1222 is to take the cartridge out and rotate the whole cartridge 180°. Turning only the stem won't do it. This is also the fix when the supply lines are reversed (for example, back-to-back installs).
Stem broke off and the shell is stuck? Moen gives a separate procedure using a 7/16" tap. It is summarized in our stuck-cartridge guide.
Don't swap it for a 1225
Moen lists the 1222 and 1225 for different valve types, and none of the Moen documents we checked lists one as a substitute for the other. If someone put a 1225 into a Posi-Temp valve, see wrong cartridge jammed in the valve. For the full comparison, see Moen 1222 vs 1225.
