Quick answer

The 1200 is Moen's original one-handle cartridge, and it's all brass. Moen 101 says it was used in all Moen one-handle faucets except the Posi-Temp shower valve until the 1225 arrived in 1981.

Where to buy: Moen still sells it.

What it fits, and what replaces it

  • Older Moen one-handle faucets. Moen 101 says it is "not compatible with newer faucets", which are designed around the 1255.
  • Moen 101 says there's no repair kit for the 1200. You can replace it with a new 1200 or a 1225.
  • One exception: in a Moentrol 3-function vertical spa transfer valve, Moen says the replacement is the 116719. Moen's shower chart lists the 1200 behind the upper handle of 3320/3330 transfer valves made before 2007, and the 116719 after 2007.

How to recognize it

  • Brass construction, and it rotates 180° from hot to cold (Moen 101).
  • It's a push/pull, volume-control cartridge, like the 1225 that followed it.

The Posi-Temp mix-up

On the archived Moen 101 page, the small product tile for the 1200 reads "For One-Handle Posi-Temp® Faucets". The text on the same page says the 1200 was used in everything except the Posi-Temp shower valve, and that the 1222 "fits all Posi-Temp faucets." We go with the detailed text: for a Posi-Temp valve you need the 1222, not a 1200. Some retailer blogs repeat the tile's wording, which is probably where the confusion comes from.

Removal notes

Moen's 104421 puller works on the 1200. Pull the stem to the full-open position before you fit the tool. If the stem pulls out of an old brass 1200 and leaves the shell behind, Moen's stuck-cartridge procedure applies (tap wrench plus hardwood dowel). See stuck cartridge.
