Quick answer

"Resetting" the regulator just means starting the gas flow again the right way. Weber says the safety device in the hose and regulator drops flow to about 10% or less when the grill isn't lit correctly. Weber says that if you wait for pressure to build in the hose, the pressure pushes the device into place and gives it the "all clear" for normal operation.

Weber's steps

Getting out of bypass (Weber) 1. Leak test Soapy water first › 2. All knobs OFF Lid open, side burner too › 3. Open tank Then wait several seconds › 4. Light Per your manual, start/high › 5. All on high Lid closed: 500–550°F in 10–15 min
From Weber's bypass article. Waiting for pressure is the step Weber calls most important.
  1. Leak test first. Weber puts this before the reset. See the leak test.
  2. Lid open, all knobs OFF. That includes the side burner, if your grill has one.
  3. Open the tank valve.
  4. Wait several seconds for the pressure to build before touching a knob. Weber calls this the most important step.
  5. Light the grill as your manual says. Weber's directions use the start/high position.
  6. Light all the burners on high and close the lid. Weber says it should reach about 500–550°F in 10–15 minutes.

In cold weather

Weber says cold weather delays the pressure equalizing, so give it extra time at the waiting step.

If it doesn't light

Weber's LP manual says if a burner doesn't light within 5 seconds, turn the knob off and wait 5 minutes before trying again.

Leak check first. Weber says do a leak test before anything else, never check for leaks with a flame, and never use a grill if a leak is present.
