In short
Start with bypass mode. Weber's own article on this is titled "Why won't your gas grill get hot? It's probably in bypass mode." That's the regulator's safety device cutting the flow to about 10% or less after the grill wasn't lit the right way. A grill working right should reach about 500–550°F in 10–15 minutes with all burners on high and the lid closed.
Hose or regulator damaged? Weber's kit (check the fits list for your grill):
Weber 7501 Hose and Regulator KitWeber's kit page says to check the fits info to choose the right part, and its support team (800-446-1071) can help.
Weber's checklist
- Bypass. Do the regulator reset: all knobs off, open the tank, wait several seconds, light per the manual, all burners on high, lid closed.
- Knob position. Weber says on its grills the start position is also high. Turning the knob further actually sets it lower.
- The thermometer. Weber asks whether the thermometer may have failed, or whether the grill's cooking has actually changed.
- Gas left in the tank. Weber asks whether there's gas in your propane tank.
- The hose and regulator. Weber asks whether the hose and regulator are properly secured to the tank. After any reconnect, do a leak test.
Cold days
Weber says cold weather delays the pressure equalizing in the regulator, so wait longer after opening the tank valve.
Still not hot?
Contact Weber at 1-800-446-1071 or support@weberstephen.com. If the hose or regulator needs replacing, Weber says to check the fits info on the kit page for your grill model.
Leak check first. Weber says do a leak test before anything else, never check for leaks with a flame, and never use a grill if a leak is present.
How we work: the checklist is from Weber's bypass article; the knob and leak details are from a Weber LP manual and tank article. We don't test grills ourselves. Follow your own grill's manual. Sources are listed below.
