Quick answer
An exchange means you hand back an empty SodaStream cylinder and pay only for the gas in a full one. You can do it at a store that carries SodaStream cylinders, or by mail: SodaStream ships full cylinders in a box you reuse to send the empties back. A spare cylinder is different. You pay for the cylinder and the gas, and there's nothing to return.
Exchange in a store
- Find a store with SodaStream's store locator. SodaStream's exchange guide points you there when you need a full cylinder right away.
- Bring your empty SodaStream cylinder. Know whether your machine takes pink Quick Connect or blue screw-in (see the fit chart).
- Swap it for a full one of the type your machine takes. If you're moving from blue to pink, SodaStream New Zealand's Terra page says a store that carries Quick Connect cylinders can do that swap. Call ahead to check stock.
Exchange by mail
- Order an exchange on SodaStream's site and pick your cylinder type. The refill page says to return one empty for each full cylinder you order.
- Keep the box. For 1–2 cylinders, SodaStream puts a pre-printed USPS return label inside. For 3 or more, the UPS label comes by email for you to print.
- Pack the empties in the same box and stick on the label.
- Send it back. USPS boxes can go in your mailbox, to your mail carrier or to a post office. UPS boxes go to a UPS location.
Lost the label? SodaStream's site has a "Reprint Return Label" link, and its support team can help.
Return deadlines and fees
| Order type | Return the empties within |
|---|---|
| One-time exchange | 60 days |
| Bundles | 90 days |
| Subscription | Your delivery interval plus 30 days |
The $15 charge: SodaStream says it charges $15 plus tax for each cylinder that isn't returned in time or comes back damaged. Its terms say the cylinders stay SodaStream's property and that damaged or tampered cylinders aren't accepted.
How often you'll exchange
SodaStream says a cylinder makes up to 60 liters of sparkling water on average and usually lasts about 4–8 weeks, depending on how fizzy you make it. SodaStream suggests keeping 3 cylinders on hand. Its spare cylinder page says exchanging 2 or more at a time saves on shipping.
If a full cylinder seems to give no gas, run the seven checks for a new cylinder before you send it back.
Storing full and empty cylinders
SodaStream's Terra manual says to keep cylinders below 50°C (122°F), out of sunlight and in a well-ventilated area, and never to tamper with the valve.
