In short

It depends on how your car relearns sensors. Some cars relearn by themselves while you drive. Others need a button sequence, and some need a tool plugged into the OBD port. Schrader says a relearn is needed whenever sensors are replaced or wheels are rotated.

A TPMS tool that does relearns and Autel sensor programming:

The three kinds of relearn

TypeHow it worksTool needed?
StationaryA sequence with the key, buttons or brake puts the car in learn mode, then each sensor is triggered in order. The horn often chirps for each one.Sometimes, to wake each sensor
OBDA scan tool reads the sensor IDs and writes them to the car through the OBD port.Yes
AutomaticYou drive for a set time above a minimum speed and the car picks up the sensors. No

That's Schrader's breakdown. Schrader also notes some cars use a mix of methods, and some have their own quirks. For example, many Nissans need a reset tool. Your owner's manual, the TIA relearn chart or a TPMS tool will list your car's method.

Programming vs relearn

These are two different jobs, and mixing them up is a common reason the light stays on after new sensors go in.

  • Programming sets up a blank programmable sensor (like a Schrader EZ-sensor or Autel MX-Sensor) to act like the right sensor for your car.
  • Relearn teaches the car the ID of each sensor and which wheel it's on.

A new programmable sensor needs both. An OE-style sensor needs only the relearn. Autel says an MX-Sensor that is cloned from the old sensor's ID and put in the same wheel needs no relearn.

What a TPMS tool can and can't do

Autel says its TPMS tools, including the TS408S, program only Autel MX-Sensors, but can relearn original sensors, MX-Sensors and other already-programmed sensors. Autel's store lists the TS408S as able to wake sensors, program MX-Sensors, run stationary, OBD and drive relearns, read and clear TPMS trouble codes, and read each sensor's ID, pressure, temperature and battery status.

Schrader publishes a separate list of tools that can program its EZ-sensor. If you already own a tool, check that list before buying Schrader sensors.

Is a tool worth it?

  • Your car relearns by driving: you likely don't need one.
  • Your car needs OBD or tool-triggered relearns, and you rotate tires at home: a tool can save trips to the shop.
  • You're putting in new programmable sensors: you need a tool that programs that brand, or let the tire shop do it when they mount the sensors.

Light still on after a relearn? Check pressures first, then check for a sensor that isn't sending. See TPMS light on but tires look fine and dead sensor batteries.

Questions people ask

What is a TPMS relearn?

It's how the car learns the ID of each sensor and which wheel it's on. Schrader says a relearn is needed when sensors are replaced or wheels are rotated.

Do I need a tool to relearn TPMS sensors?

It depends on the car. Schrader lists three kinds of relearn: stationary (often a button or key sequence, sometimes with a tool to wake each sensor), OBD (a scan tool plugged into the car), and automatic (you drive for a while). Some cars, like many Nissans, need a reset tool.

Is programming a TPMS sensor the same as a relearn?

No. Programming sets up a blank sensor to work like the right sensor for your car. A relearn teaches the car that sensor's ID. A new programmable sensor needs both.

Can an Autel tool program any sensor?

No. Autel says its TPMS tools program only Autel MX-Sensors, but they can relearn original, MX and other already-programmed sensors.
