In short
Most of the time it's air trapped in the new filter or a filter that isn't fully locked in. Take the filter out, put it back in and turn it until it stops, then hold a glass under the dispenser for several minutes to push the air out. GE says to press for at least 5 minutes after a filter change, and Samsung says up to 5 minutes until the flow is steady. Sputtering at first is normal. If there's still nothing, check the water valve and, on GE fridges, the filter's chip.
Wrong filter? A filter for a different model can look the same and not seal. Check yours by model number.
GE everydrop (Whirlpool family) Samsung LG Frigidaire1. Filter locked in
Pull the filter and reinstall it the way your filter's instructions show. Most twist-in filters turn until they stop and line up with a mark; LG says to make sure the lock mark lines up with the reference line. Whirlpool says an incorrectly installed filter cuts water flow to the dispenser and ice maker. While it's out, compare the number on the new filter with the old one.
2. Supply valve fully open
Some makers' steps (LG's, for one) have you close the water supply valve before the change. Make sure it's back open all the way. GE lists a supply or saddle valve that isn't fully open as a cause of no water, and a commenter in an r/appliancerepair thread noted that a half-closed saddle valve can cause sputtering and a buzzing sound.
3. Purge the air
- GE: press the dispenser for at least 5 minutes after a filter change. GE says the first ounces may sputter, which is normal.
- Whirlpool: press 5 seconds, release 5 seconds, until water flows steadily, then keep going for 1 to 4 gallons depending on the filter. Skipping this can mean dripping, small or hollow ice and cloudy water.
- Samsung: hold for up to 5 minutes and keep going until flow is steady, about 2 to 3 gallons.
- LG: about 2.5 gallons, 30 seconds on and 60 off, for 5 minutes.
If the old filter wouldn't come out in the first place, GE says air may be trapped inside. Pressing the dispenser relieves the pressure so the filter drops out.
4. RFID error (GE XWFE fridges)
GE fridges built for the XWFE filter read a chip in it. GE says a missing, wrong or non-GE filter can show "ERR", a flashing red light or a buzz, and the fridge stops the water. Reseat the filter and check that it's a genuine XWFE from a trusted seller. A former GE repair tech on r/Appliances added that each XWFE chip number can only be used once in the same fridge, so moving an old chip to a generic filter won't work.
5. Test without the filter, only if your maker allows it
This tells you whether the filter is the problem or something further back is.
- GE: install the bypass plug in place of the filter. Without a filter or the plug, GE says neither the dispenser nor the ice maker will run. GE's no-water page says you can get a bypass plug by calling 1-800-GECARES.
- Whirlpool: on its fridges, removing the filter puts the water system in bypass mode.
- Samsung: removing the filter to test works only on models made in 2024 or earlier, not 2025 or newer.
If water flows normally without the filter, the filter is the problem: wrong part, a bad one, or not seated. If it's still dry, the cause is the water line, inlet valve or water pressure. Samsung says its fridges need at least 30 psi and that reverse-osmosis systems can lower pressure. Time to call for service.
Water leaking around the filter? Shut off the water supply to the fridge, take the filter out and reinstall it. If it still leaks, check that it's the right filter for your model; owners on repair forums often trace leaks to cheap or mismatched filters.
After it's working
Reset the filter light (steps in how often to change a fridge filter). Whirlpool says to allow 24 hours for the water to chill, and if you don't have a dispenser, to throw out the first three full bins of ice.
How we work: these checks come from GE, Samsung, Whirlpool and LG troubleshooting pages, listed below, plus what owners describe in repair forums. We don't do repairs or test fridges. If your manual says something different, follow the manual.
Questions people ask
Why is there no water after I changed my fridge filter?
Usually air in the new filter or a filter that isn't fully locked in. Reseat it, make sure the supply valve is open, and hold the dispenser for several minutes. GE says at least 5 minutes after a filter change.
Can I run my fridge without a water filter?
It depends on the brand. Whirlpool fridges work in bypass mode with the filter out. GE fridges need a bypass plug. Samsung says removing the filter to test only works on models made in 2024 or earlier.
Why does my GE fridge show ERR after a filter change?
Fridges built for the GE XWFE filter read a chip in it. GE says a missing, wrong or non-GE filter can show ERR, a flashing red light or a buzz, and stop the water.
