In short
Open the pail at the middle, cut the full bag with the built-in cutter, and tie it off. Then pull fresh film down to the bottom and tie a knot to start the next bag. These steps are for square-refill pails like the Standard and Plus. Easy Roll pails are simpler, and they're covered below.
Empty a full bag (Standard, Plus and other square pails)
From Litter Genie's Plus pail instruction sheet:
- Open the unit at the middle. The pail separates so you can get to the bag.
- Cut the bag with the built-in cutter, then tie it. The cutter is child-proof and built into the pail, so you don't need scissors.
- Pull the film down to the bottom of the unit and tie a knot. That knot is the bottom of your next bag.
- Close the unit.
Because the film is continuous, you choose how long each bag is. A longer pull uses more film per bag.
Load a new square refill
When the film runs out, swap the cartridge. Litter Genie's steps:
- Pull the refill's plastic tab and remove the outer rim.
- Start at the notch left by the tab and pull out about a foot of film. Push the film down through the center of the rim and tie a knot at the bottom.
- Open the lid and pull the funnel up. You'll see a lip around the inside. Set the refill on that lip.
- Pull the handle and push the film down into the bottom chamber.
- Push the funnel down and close the lid.
If the cartridge won't sit right, see refill doesn't fit.
Easy Roll and Platinum pails
These use a roll of 24 pre-perforated bags at the bottom of the pail. When a bag is full, you tear it off and the next one is ready. There is no cutting or tying. Litter Genie sums up loading a new roll in three steps: place it, pull it, attach it.
How often to empty it
Litter Genie's Plus instructions say clumps are sealed away for up to 14 days for one cat, and its FAQ says the Easy Roll pail holds up to 8 days of soiled litter for one cat. Empty it sooner if it's full or you have more than one cat.
