Quick answer
APC puts the typical life of a UPS battery at 3 to 5 years for lead-acid (VRLA) and 8 to 10 years for lithium-ion. Most home Back-UPS units use lead-acid. Where your battery lands in that range depends mostly on temperature, how often it fully discharges, and how heavily the UPS is loaded.

APC says lead-acid batteries do best at 20–25°C (68–77°F). As a rule, every 8°C (15°F) increase cuts battery life in half. APC's example: a battery expected to last 4 years at 77°F would last about 2 years at 95°F. The battery inside a UPS also runs warmer than the room, so give the unit airflow. Don't box it in a cabinet or under a pile of cables.
What else shortens UPS battery life
| Factor | What APC recommends |
|---|---|
| Runtime calibrations | Only once or twice a year, and only if needed. Frequent deep discharges shorten battery life. |
| Using it as a portable battery | Don't. APC says a UPS is built for emergency backup, not for repeated discharging and recharging. |
| Load | Stay under 80% of the UPS's rated capacity. Heavy loads drain the battery faster and wear it out sooner. |
| Storage | Store new batteries or UPS units no longer than 6 months from purchase (they leave the factory at about 80% charge). Recharge at least every 6 months when stored at 5–86°F, and every 3 months at 86–113°F. |
Signs your battery is near the end
- The Replace Battery light or the one-minute chirp every 5 hours. Most Back-UPS units test their battery every 14 days. APC calls the light a warning that the battery may be near the end of its life and says to replace it within 2–4 weeks. Beep codes explained.
- Aging symptoms. APC says aging lead-acid batteries take longer to charge, run hotter, and give shorter runtimes.
- Age. Because lead-acid batteries typically reach end of life at about 5 years, APC recommends replacing them before that age.

Questions people ask
How long do UPS batteries last?
APC says typical lead-acid (VRLA) UPS batteries last 3 to 5 years, and lithium-ion batteries 8 to 10 years.
Does heat shorten UPS battery life?
Yes. APC's rule of thumb is that battery life halves for every 8°C (15°F) above the 20 to 25°C ideal range.
How should I store a spare UPS battery?
APC says to recharge stored batteries every 6 months at 5 to 86°F, and every 3 months at 86 to 113°F.
