Quick answer
A fresh battery doesn't turn the Replace Battery light off by itself. The light only clears after the UPS passes a self-test, and APC says that test needs a fully charged battery. If you run it straight after the swap, a good new battery can still fail. This question comes up often on Schneider Electric's own user forum.
Make sure the cartridge matches the UPS model before you start troubleshooting.

- Confirm the battery is connected. APC's first step is to check that the internal battery is plugged in. Your user manual shows how.
- Check the load. Remove anything that overloads the battery outlets. APC suggests only computers and monitors on battery outlets. If the UPS is near full load (over 80% of the battery outlets' watt capacity), don't use it as a master switch for your equipment.
- Let it charge. Disconnect any external battery pack. APC says to run the self-test with the UPS fully charged, which means 5 hours of charging without a switch to battery, with your normal load attached.
- Run the manual self-test. With the UPS plugged into the wall, hold the On/Off button for about 4 seconds until you hear a long tone. The yellow On Battery light comes on and the green On-Line light flashes for about 15 seconds.
| Result after the self-test | What APC says it means |
|---|---|
| Replace Battery light turns off | The battery does not need replacing. |
| Light stays on and the unit chirps for a full minute | The battery failed the test and should be replaced. |
Smart-UPS: longer charge, different button
For Smart-UPS and Smart-UPS Online, APC says to charge to 100% with the normal load connected. That means at least 8 hours for a standard unit, or 24 hours with external battery packs. Smart-UPS units charge whether they are on or off, as long as they are plugged into good power. Then start a self-test from the LCD menu (Test & Diags → UPS Self Test). On units without a screen, press and hold I/Test until the lights flash. If the Replace Battery light stays lit after that, APC says the battery needs replacing.
If a brand-new battery still fails
- Check the cartridge number. Use the UPS model from the sticker on the bottom or rear, not the old battery's label. APC's selector warns against searching by battery number.
- Use the warranty. APC says the Back-UPS comes with a 2-year warranty that includes the battery. Smart-UPS batteries are covered for 2 years from purchase. Genuine RBCs carry their own two-year warranty for lead-acid batteries. Within those windows, contact APC Support with the part and serial numbers.
