In short

In Roku's steps, the light on a voice remote flashes when it's in pairing mode. Roku says the remote and the Roku device both have to be in pairing mode at the same time, so if the light flashes but no pairing message appears, restart the Roku and pair again.

Need a replacement? Roku's own remotes:

Roku says its voice remotes work with any Roku TV, Roku audio device and most Roku players, and that some older models may not be supported. The Players Remote is for Roku players and audio devices; Roku sells a separate Roku TV Remote.

  1. Restart the Roku device. Unplug it, wait at least 5 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the Home screen.
  2. Pair again. Hold the pairing button (or Back + Home) for 5 seconds until the light flashes, then wait for the pairing message. Details: how to pair a Roku remote.
  3. Restart the remote. Battery remote: remove both batteries, press any two buttons, and reinsert them negative end first. Rechargeable remote: hold the pairing button (or Back + Home) for 20 seconds and wait for the light to stop flashing, then charge for at least 5 hours.
  4. Clear the path. Roku says to check for interference, obstacles and distance. With a streaming stick, use the wireless receiver on the USB power cable, or Roku's free HDMI extender.

Not working even with new batteries?

  • Simple remote: Roku says to take the old batteries out, press any two buttons, then insert a fresh matching pair. Then check line of sight: simple remotes are IR and must point at the device.
  • Voice remote: do the remote restart above, then restart the Roku and pair again.
  • Still shows low battery? Roku says to reboot the remote, and to disable unused remotes (remove their batteries, or hold Back + Home + Mute for 5 seconds).

Remote hot to the touch? Roku says stop using it right away, don't touch or remove the batteries, and let it cool on a hard, non-flammable surface such as tile. Contact Roku support if it doesn't cool down.

How we work: steps come from Roku's remote fix and pairing articles. Roku doesn't publish a full light-code chart in these articles, so we don't guess at other light patterns. We don't test Roku remotes ourselves. Sources are listed below.
