Quick answer

Andis's manuals put blade heat down to the high speed of its clippers and say to check blade heat often, especially on close-cutting blades like the #30 and #40.

The cool-down routine Andis recommends

Keeping a clipper blade cool (Andis manuals) 1. Check Feel blade heat often, especially #30 / #40 close blades › 2. Cool Dip blade only in Blade Care Plus or spray Cool Care Plus › 3. Oil Coolant isn't enough oil. Add clipper oil, blades pointing down › 4. Swap Detachable clipper? Change to a second blade of the same size
Andis's routine for a hot blade: check heat often, cool it, oil it, or swap to a second blade of the same size.
  1. Cool it. Dip just the blade in Andis Blade Care Plus, or spray Andis Cool Care Plus.
  2. Then oil it. Andis says coolant spray is an excellent blade coolant, but spray lubricants don't contain enough oil for good lubrication. Follow with a few drops of clipper oil on the front and sides of the blade, and wipe off the excess.
  3. Swap blades. On a detachable-blade clipper you can switch to a second blade while the first cools. Andis notes that using several blades of the same size is popular among groomers.

Oil more often than you think

Andis says to oil blades before, during and after each use. If the blade leaves streaks or slows down, that's a sure sign it needs oil. A dry blade causes more friction and more heat. To clear packed hair, Andis suggests running just the blades in a shallow pan of clipper oil with the clipper on, then wiping them dry.

Blades built to run cooler

  • CeramicEdge: Andis says its ceramic cutter "stays up to 75% cooler than steel". The CeramicEdge #10 is item 64315.
  • M-Force: Andis says these magnetic-tension blades run 30% cooler.

Those figures are Andis's own claims. We haven't measured them.

When heat means the blade or clipper is worn

Andis says to replace broken or nicked blades to prevent injury. If cleaning doesn't fix a blade that won't cut, the AGC2 manual says to try more than one blade, since the current one may be dull. If no blade cuts well, the clipper's blade drive assembly may need replacing.

Oil with the blades pointing down. Andis's manuals say to hold the clipper with the blades pointing down so oil doesn't get into the motor, and to store it blade-down too.

How we work: the cooling and oiling steps on this page come from Andis's AGC2 and Easy Clip Versa manuals. Blade claims come from Andis's blade chart. Sources are listed below.
