In short

Every 40 gallons (about 2 months) for a white Original filter, and every 120 gallons (about 6 months) for a blue Elite. Those are Brita's own numbers, and they're based on 11 glasses of water a day. If your household drinks more, or you have hard water, Brita says you may need to change it sooner.

Brita's Elite performance sheet adds one more detail: for best results, run no more than 2 gallons through an Elite filter a day.

How to keep track

  1. Use the light on the lid. Reset it every time you put in a new filter, and pick the right mode (Original or Elite). Steps for each lid are in Brita filter light reset.
  2. Use the sticker. Pitchers without a light come with a sticker or cling calendar. On an older sticker, Brita says you can still track an Elite: put the left side over the month you changed it and the right side over the month six months later.
  3. Sign up for reminders. Brita offers filter change reminder emails, which it suggests if your indicator can't track Elite filters.

Bought your pitcher before 2019?

Brita says the light on pitchers and dispensers bought before 2019 may not track Elite filter life. If your lid's indicator doesn't have an Elite (or Longlast+) setting, it can only count down for the 40-gallon Original filter. Use the sticker method or Brita's reminder emails for an Elite.

Signs it may be time sooner

  • Slow filtering. Brita says sediment such as sand or rust can clog a filter quickly and shorten its life, so you may need to change the Elite more often to keep it flowing. More in Brita filter slow.
  • Hard water. Brita says hard water can mean changing filters more often.

Do spare filters go bad?

Not while sealed. Brita says an unused filter in its sealed pouch has an indefinite shelf life. Keep it in a cool, dry place. If a white Original filter is more than a year old, Brita recommends soaking it for 15 minutes before first use.
