In short

Brita says an Elite filter should take 10 to 15 minutes, at most, to filter a full reservoir. If yours is slower, Brita points to two usual causes: sediment in your tap water clogging the filter, and air in the water (aeration) from filling too fast. Both have simple fixes.

Clogged for good? A new filter:

Brita says homes with a lot of sediment may need to replace the Elite more often to keep it flowing.

Brita's checks, in order

Slow Brita filter? Check these (Brita) 1. Fill gently No full-blast faucet. Pour on the side, not onto the filter 2. Sediment Sand or rust clogs filters. Change sooner 3. Filter age Original: 40 gal Elite: 120 gal 4. Seat it Groove to ridge, press firmly. Vent hole faces the back
From Brita's pitcher FAQs and Standard filter guide.
  1. Fill more gently. Brita says aeration can slow filtering. Don't open the faucet to a full stream, and don't aim the water straight onto the top of the filter. Brita's Standard filter guide says to pour on the side of the reservoir instead.
  2. Think about sediment. Brita says sand or rust in tap water, which some U.S. homes have, can clog a filter quickly, slow it down and shorten its life. If that's your water, plan on changing filters sooner. See how often to change a Brita filter.
  3. Check the filter's age. Brita rates the Original for 40 gallons (about 2 months) and the Elite for 120 gallons (about 6 months). A filter past that point is due anyway.
  4. Re-seat the filter. Line up the groove on the filter with the ridge in the reservoir and press down firmly. Brita says that's also the fix if the filter keeps popping out.
  5. Check the reservoir is in the right way. After washing, Brita says the reservoir's vent hole (near where the filter sits) should face the back of the pitcher, with the fill lid toward the back.

New filter filtering slowly?

  • White Original: Brita says rinse it under cold running water for 15 seconds before you put it in. If it's more than a year old, Brita recommends soaking it for 15 minutes first.
  • Blue Elite: no pre-rinse needed, per Brita. Water goes through the sides of an Elite instead of the bottom, so it doesn't behave the same as the white filter.
  • First few fills: Brita says to toss the first three pitchers (or water plants with them), and that carbon dust in the first fillings is normal.

Water leaking or spilling?

Brita says the usual cause is filling past the Max Fill line. Water can spill into the handle and look like a leak when you pour.

Black specks in the water?

Brita says carbon specks in the pitcher after several weeks are normal with its older filters.

Use cold tap water only. Brita says not to use hot water in its pitcher filters. The limit is 85°F (29°C).

Questions people ask

How long should a Brita filter take to filter?

Brita says an Elite filter should take 10 to 15 minutes, at most, to filter a full reservoir.

Why is my new Brita filter so slow?

Brita points to sediment in tap water and to aeration. Don't fill from a full-blast faucet or pour straight onto the filter, and make sure it's pressed firmly into place.

Why does my Brita filter keep popping out?

Brita says to line up the groove on the filter with the ridge in the reservoir and press down firmly for a snug fit.
