Quick answer

Filtrete recommends changing 1-inch filters at least every three months and 4-inch and thicker filters every 12 months. ENERGY STAR says to check the filter every month, and change it when it looks dirty. Pets, smokers, renovation dust and a fan that runs all the time all mean changing it sooner.

Change it sooner if your home has

Filtrete lists these conditions:

  • Pets
  • Smokers
  • Construction work, or furniture or drywall sanding
  • A fan that runs continuously

When in doubt, Filtrete says to change the filter more often.

Why it matters

ENERGY STAR says a dirty filter makes your heating and cooling system work harder to move air through the house, which can raise energy costs and damage the equipment, leading to early failure. Filtrete says a filter used longer than its recommended life may begin to restrict airflow or cause the system to malfunction.

Set a reminder

Filtrete's app can set 30, 60 or 90-day reminders for 1-inch filters, and 3, 6 or 12 months for deep-pleat filters. A calendar reminder works just as well. When you swap it, make sure the arrow points the right way.

How we work: change intervals come from Filtrete's FAQ, install guide and product page. The monthly check comes from ENERGY STAR. Your furnace manual's interval comes first if it's different. Sources are listed below.
