Quick answer

Most "my new ring doesn't seal" problems are really seating problems. The ring has to sit all the way behind the metal ring rack on the underside of the lid, pressed down evenly with no puckers. Here's the method from the Instant Pot manual, plus the quick check that tells you it's right.

Step by step

Installing an Instant Pot sealing ring 1. Remove Pull the old ring out from behind the rack › 2. Inspect rack Secured, centered, even all the way round › 3. Press in Seat ring behind rack, pressed down evenly, no puckers › 4. Flip test Turn the lid over: ring should stay put
Four steps from the Instant Pot manual: remove the old ring, inspect the ring rack, press the new ring in evenly, then flip the lid to check it stays.
  1. Remove the old ring. Grip the edge of the ring and pull it out from behind the ring rack.
  2. Inspect the ring rack. The manual says the rack should be secured, centered and an even height all the way around the lid. If it's deformed, don't try to repair it yourself. Contact Instant Pot Customer Care.
  3. Place the new ring over the rack and press it down firmly all the way around, so the ring sits behind the rack without puckering.
  4. Do the flip test. The ring should be snug and should not fall out when you turn the lid over. If it drops out, it isn't seated properly, or it's stretched and needs replacing.

Lid hard to close after changing the ring?

Instant Pot lists three reasons:

  • The sealing ring isn't snug behind the ring rack. Reseat it and press it down.
  • The float valve is in the popped-up position. Remove and clean off any food debris.
  • The contents are still hot. Set the valve to Venting, then lower the lid onto the base slowly to let the heat dissipate.

Common mistakes

  • Two rings at once. The manual says only one ring should be installed at a time.
  • Wrong size. 3-quart, 4/5/6-quart and 8-quart rings aren't interchangeable. See the size chart.
  • Forgetting the ring after washing. With no ring, steam leaks from the side of the lid and the pot won't come to pressure.
