In short

Yes. Both Sylvania and Philips say to replace headlight bulbs in pairs. Sylvania says headlights dim over time, so always replace bulbs in pairs to keep brightness and color equal. Philips' HB3 datasheet says to change both headlamps at once for more safety. When you do it, don't touch the glass.

The swap, step by step

Swapping headlight bulbs (Sylvania and Philips) 1. Buy a pair Bulbs dim with age, so replace both › 2. Hands off glass Gloves or a clean shop towel › 3. Match the size Same bulb number on both sides › 4. Check both Both lights on before you drive
Sylvania says always replace bulbs in pairs and never touch the glass. Philips says change both at once.
  1. Get the right number. Check the old bulb or your owner's manual. See the size chart.
  2. Buy a pair. Sylvania sells its Basic H11, 9005 and 9006 bulbs as 2-packs.
  3. Keep your fingers off the glass. Sylvania says never touch the glass, and to use gloves or a clean shop towel to reduce the transfer of oils during installation.
  4. Follow your owner's manual for how to reach the bulb on your car.
  5. Check both lights work before you drive.

Why one new bulb can look wrong

Sylvania's reason for pairs is that headlights dim over time. A new bulb next to an old one can be brighter or a different color, which is why it recommends changing both.

Touched the glass by accident?

The makers we read give the prevention step, not a cleanup method, so we don't give one here. Check the instructions in your bulb's package, and handle the next one with gloves or a clean towel as Sylvania says.

Safety first. Follow the bulb-change steps and safety notes in your owner's manual for your car.

How we work: advice comes from Sylvania's product pages and Philips' datasheet. We don't test bulbs ourselves. Sources are listed below.
