In short

A GFCI that won't reset is usually locked out on purpose. Leviton lists four causes: no power reaching the outlet (often a tripped breaker), a ground fault that's still there, line and load wires reversed, or a damaged outlet.

From Leviton's reset lockout guide. Call a licensed electrician for wiring you aren't comfortable with.
  1. Check the panel. A GFCI can't reset without power. Look for a tripped breaker or blown fuse.
  2. Unplug everything. Unplug devices from the GFCI and from any outlets downstream of it, then press RESET firmly.
  3. Press TEST, then RESET. This makes sure the internal mechanism works.
  4. Check the wiring (power off). Leviton says reversed line and load wires prevent reset. On a new install, a GFCI that won't reset while its light is green points to reversed wires. Turn off the breaker and correct them, or call a licensed electrician.
  5. Look for damage. Replace the GFCI if it's discolored, cracked, loose or wet.
  6. Still stuck? Call an electrician.

Wiring is a job for the breaker off. Turn off power at the panel before touching any wiring. Leviton's guides point to a licensed electrician for wiring you aren't comfortable correcting, and for trips that keep happening.

How we work: the checklist follows Leviton's lockout guide; the light meanings come from its LED diagnosis sheet. We don't test electrical devices ourselves. Sources are listed below.

Questions people ask

What do I do if my GFCI won't reset?

Leviton says check the breaker panel, unplug everything including downstream outlets, press TEST then RESET, check for reversed wiring with the power off, and replace a damaged outlet.

Why won't a new GFCI reset?

Leviton says that after installation, this is often reversed line and load wires, especially if the light is green.

When should I replace a GFCI?

Leviton says replace it if it's discolored, cracked, loose or wet, or if a red light stays on after TEST and RESET.
