Quick answer

A standard (particulate) cabin filter traps dust, pollen and similar particles. A carbon filter does that and also absorbs odors and some gases. FRAM suggests carbon for heavy traffic and city driving. HEPA filters, like Bosch's, are rated for much finer particles.

The three types

Cabin filter types (makers' claims) Particulate FRAM: 90–99% of 5–100 micron particles dust, pollen Carbon FRAM: also odors and gases like nitrogen dioxide Electrostatic FRAM: charged layer for ultra-fine particles, smoke, diesel carbon HEPA Bosch: 99.97% at 0.3 microns (ISO 29463-3)
What FRAM and Bosch say each cabin filter type does.
TypeWhat the maker says it doesExample
Particulate (standard)FRAM: removes 90 to 99% of particles from 5 to 100 microns, like dust and pollenFRAM Drive
CarbonFRAM: activated carbon (plus Arm & Hammer baking soda in Fresh Breeze) removes odors and harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxideFRAM Fresh Breeze CF10285, CF10134
ElectrostaticFRAM: a charged layer attracts ultra-fine particles such as cigarette smoke and diesel carbon. FRAM says TrueAir's first layer captures 95% of airborne bacteria and viruses.FRAM TrueAir

Which one to buy

  • Standard if you mainly want to stop dust and pollen and keep the vents clear.
  • Carbon if exhaust smells or city traffic fumes come through the vents. FRAM recommends carbon for drivers who are often in heavy traffic or urban areas.
  • HEPA if you want the finest particle capture. Check Bosch's fit list for your vehicle before you buy.

Whatever you pick, it has to be the right part for your vehicle (see finding your part) and go in with the arrow the right way.

How we work: filter type descriptions and percentages are the makers' own claims from FRAM's and Bosch's pages. We haven't measured them. Sources are listed below.

Questions people ask

Is a carbon cabin air filter better than a standard one?

FRAM says carbon filters also remove odors and harmful gases like nitrogen dioxide, and recommends them for heavy traffic and city driving.

What does a standard cabin air filter catch?

FRAM says particulate filters typically remove 90 to 99% of particles from 5 to 100 microns, such as dust and pollen.

What is a HEPA cabin air filter?

Bosch says its HEPA cabin filters capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, tested to ISO 29463-3.
