In short
Most broken trimmer line comes down to a few causes that Echo, Husqvarna and Ryobi all list: the wrong line diameter, cutting against hard surfaces, a worn or damaged trimmer head, heat buildup, and old line that has dried out and turned brittle.
Trimmer line (Oregon Gatorline range):
Oregon Gatorline round, square and twistThe causes, and what to do
| Cause | What the makers say |
|---|---|
| Wrong diameter | Use the size in your manual (Echo). The right diameter depends on your model and head (Husqvarna). Too thick or too thin can feed badly and snap under load (Ryobi). |
| Hard surfaces | Concrete, brick, fences and other hard objects wear line down quickly (Ryobi, Echo). |
| Line too long | Line that reaches past the cutter blade on the debris shield is more likely to break. Always run with the shield on (Echo). |
| Worn head | Burrs, rough edges or damage inside the head can cut or fray line. Replace a worn head (Echo). Damaged parts cause uneven feed (Ryobi). |
| Heat | Long runs at high speed can soften or melt line. Use the lowest effective speed (Echo). |
| Old, brittle line | Line gets brittle, especially if stored in sunlight. Store it cool and dry. Soaking it in water overnight may restore flexibility (Echo, Husqvarna). |
Quick check order
- Compare the line size to your manual. See the size chart.
- Look inside the head for burrs or damage.
- Bend a length of line. If it snaps or feels stiff, soak it overnight or use fresh line.
- Keep the line off concrete, brick and fences where you can.
- Check the debris shield is fitted.
Echo says to contact an authorized dealer if the line still breaks after these checks.
Stop the engine or remove the battery before opening the trimmer head, as your manual directs.
How we work: causes come from Echo, Husqvarna and Ryobi support pages. We don't test trimmers ourselves. Sources are listed below.

Echo, Husqvarna and Ryobi list the wrong diameter, hard surfaces, a worn trimmer head, heat buildup, and old, brittle line.
How do I make old trimmer line flexible again?
Echo and Husqvarna say soaking dry, brittle line in water overnight may restore flexibility. Store line cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
Can the trimmer head cut the line?
Yes. Echo says burrs, rough edges or damage inside the head can cut or fray line, and to replace a worn head.
